DRILLING IN OREGON

Drilling or constructing a well in Oregon is governed by rules and regulations put forth bythe Oregon Water Resources Department. The Oregon Water Resources Department is the agency that oversees well construction, alteration, and abandonment in Oregon. The Department also licenses well constructors and enforces well construction standards. Oregon's ground water is protected by laws established by the state of Oregon. Drillers and drilling contractors are required by law to be licensed by the state and a strict construction code is followed to ensure that every well meets state health and safety standards. Prior to constructing a well, a $225.00 start card fee must first be obtained and signed by the land owner stating the location of the well to be constructed.

During the course of a building or demolition project, a contractor may come across a water supply or monitoring well that needs to be altered or abandoned before the project can be completed. Because of the importance of maintaining a safe ground water supply, it is critical to have any well related work done in a proper manner.
